The truth regarding the $8 line cleaning.
Fact 1. There are only a finite number of lines a draft service company can properly clean in a day WITHOUT disrupting bar service.
Fact 2. Two guys properly cleaning 10 lines should take about an hour at minimum.
The Math. So, let's say they clean 1000 lines per month for easy math. That is $8000 dollars gross before taxes, supplies, and travel. After expenses they may earn $750 per week per tech. An honest weeks work I agree.
But time is a killer in this business and with a finite number of accounts cutting corners may be the only option to increase their hourly rate.
3 most common Shortcuts
The truth regarding the $8 line cleaning.
Shortcut 1. Just run the cleaning through the line without letting it activate. Not what you are paying for.
Shortcut 2. Skip disassembling the faucets, an area of buildup and harmful to your system long-term requiring future replacement parts.
Shortcut 3. This is the worst time saver because it costs you BIG money. Flushing the cleaner with beer. Flushing with beer wastes a minimum of 1/2 gallon (underestimated) of beer per line (4 pints). One of my accounts pays $1.84 per beer. This means if you're using a service that flushes with beer the cost per line is stunning.
$8 per line + (4 x $1.84)= $15.36 per line.
At one of my long draw accounts, I used 15 gallons of water to flush the lines. Think about that! That's almost 3 logs of beer.
This doesn't include your lost profits, or the safety issues related to this practice.
